Chapter 10

The noise of talking, random words that made no sense, pulled him out of his sleep the next time. He felt less like a weight was sitting on his chest and more loose-limbed and hot. Feverish, maybe? He turned his head to listen to the words. Where was he?

“He’s on the run with a bullet, I don’t know any more… If you can. Something’s fucked up here, hence the sister watching… Governor Larson has his own damned detail. Ignore him, but she’s a stay-at-home mom. Just visit, maybe… Yeah. Fuck knows.”

Governor? Sister? Mac’s voice, did Mac have a phone? Sam needed to call his sister or his dad, his doctor, fuck, anyone. Using every bit of effort, he managed to roll himself onto his front. For a second, he hung suspended over the floor, until he attempted to move his hand and he ended up sprawled on the hard wooden floor. He cursed. He lay where he was as he tried to organize his thoughts and allowed his brain to form coherent actions for his body to follow.

He pushed himself up on all fours and then stayed there for the longest time as nausea threatened to have him retching onto the floor.

“I owe you one, D.” Mac’s voice was closer. And then hands helped him back up on the bed. “As much as you look all kinds of fine on all fours, you need to get your ass back on the bed.”

Everything was foggy, like a heavy weight lay over every inch of him, and he attempted to push it away. Was Mac pushing him, an immovable force pinning him to the floor? Because it felt like it. When nothing happened, Sam found he didn’t have the energy to even fight it, and instead he cursed in his head.

“Gerroffmee,” he snarled. Or at least he attempted a snarl, but even to his ears, it sounded more like a pathetic plea.

“What you doing on the floor?” Mac asked.

“I fell out” was all Sam could manage. Then the mist descended again. He was so tired. “Wh’appened?” he added.

“You stood on a trip,” Mac explained with a hint of laughter in his voice.

“Notfuckingfunny,” Sam slurred. What was in his system? Had it been some kind of roofie?

“You conscious?” Mac asked from somewhere very close by.

Sam nodded, and pain blossomed in his head. He wasn’t going to do that again. “Fuck you,” he forced out as carefully as he could manage while still ensuring Mac got the full heat of the words. Then he felt strong arms helping him sit upright, then a hard body and the brush of a beard against his skin as he slumped a little. “Shit,” he cursed under his breath.

“It won’t last long. It is just enough for me to check out who you are if you stumbled into here.”

Sam wasn’t sure anyone would actually stumble on to anything that Mac had set up. The trails were pretty well hidden.

“How many more are there?” He heard the slurring in his voice.
